afternoon, i'm michelle griego. a day after the death of nelson mandela, much of the world has paused to reflect on his legacy and also his accomplishments. cbs reporter tara mergener is live in washington with more. >> reporter: mandela was an international icon. today millions are mourning his passing and celebrating his remarkable life. the flag is after half-staff at the south african embassy in washington. outside his home in johannesburg, mourners are gathering to remember the man they called madiba. a memorial service will be held tuesday and the outpouring of love says something with the caliber of the man who led the country out of apartheid. >> we'll always love madiba for teaching us that it is possible to overcome hatred and anger to build a new nation. >> reporter: messages are pouring in from around the world. from the dalai lama in india. >> we must [ indiscernible ] that sadness translate into determination. 'm juliette goodrich. frank and michelle have the morning off. new this morning, firefighters are looking for the person who lived in this san jose mobile home. it was destroyed by a fire overnight. you can see the home completely gutted. the fire started at 2 a.m. in the casa alondre mobile home park on monterey road. firefighters didn't find anyone and neighbors don't think he was home at the time of the fire. >>> we have live team coverage of the freeze warning. cold temperatures gripping much of the bay area. kiet do live in fremont where temperatures are in the 30s. but we start with lawrence karnow. he means business with a turtleneck on in the weather center. >> throughout the day and the next five to seven days these temperatures are going to be chilly. out the doors the skies have cleared out. the winds have started to subside. we have seen some very cold temperatures. freeze warnings up for almost the entire bay area. overnight lows in the 20s and 30s. throughout the day temperatures not going to be a whole lot warmer. starting out at 29 degrees in santa rosa. get a little wind

and causing mass confusion among riders. good afternoon, i'm juliette goodrich. frank and michelle are off today. we are following breaking news in the east bay this afternoon. a malfunction on a barred train this morning caused it to stall out in a tunnel between rockridge and orinda stations. some cars quickly filled with smoke, sending several passengers to the hospital. anne makovec is live at the orinda station with more on the breakdown and the panic that followed. anne. >> reporter: oh, really was a mess. all told, nine people were treated for medical issues and we just found out from the fire department saying it was not smoke, it was brake dust that was filling the bart cars. but it affected a lot of people negatively. 700 people were stuck inside a tunnel inside a train for almost an hour and the entire pittsburg-bay point bart line was affected for most of the morning. passengers were taken out on stretchers once they arrived at the rockridge bart station this morning. the train they were riding had suddenly stopped in the berkeley hills tunnel partially filled with smoke. >> an
